McKINLEY’S DUBLIN DOUBLE
23 August 2010
There was a welcome return to action in Irish hillclimbing in August as the Connaught Competition Engines Hillclimb and Sprint Championship resumed after a long layoff. The MEC motor club provided two great Dublin venues, a superb hillclimb in The Naul and a great sprint near Lusk. Entries were very strong with over 50 entries on each day. Despite some delays in getting started on Saturday, competitors enjoyed practice and three timed runs, with four timed runs at Sunday’s event. Championship sponsor Phil Price made a welcome visit driving Dermot Nolan’s Reynard 873, showing that even after five years out of hillclimb single seaters he still has the competitive edge.
Each of the two events was won by local man Simon McKinley in the Lant-Warrior RT2. He was followed home both days by reigning champion Paul O’Connell in his Pilbeam-Hart MP58. The consistency followed through both days with Seamus Morris finishing third overall in the Vauxhall powered Pilbeam MP62.
